Recently, the world's first GWh-level sodium-ion battery production line product launch ceremony was officially held, and relevant sources also revealed that it is planned to expand the production of Fuyang production line to 3~5GWh in 2023 to achieve the promotion and application of 100MW-level sodium electric energy storage system.
The commissioning of this production line means that layered transition metal sodium oxide batteries officially lead the industrialization of sodium electricity! Although the energy storage revolution has a long way to go, it has also missed a glimmer.

Sodium-ion battery is mainly composed of positive and negative electrodes, electrolyte and separator, is the best replacement of lithium-ion batteries, according to the different positive electrode materials, the mainstream technical route has three: layered transition metal oxides, Prussian blue compounds and polyanionic compounds.
The advantages of layered transition metal oxides are simple preparation, high specific capacity, high energy density, and can share the production line with lithium battery ternary materials, the disadvantage is that most of the layered materials are easy to absorb water, or react with air, and the structural stability and electrochemical performance are poor.
The advantages of Prussian blue compounds are low cost and high energy density, but the disadvantages are that cyanide has potential toxicity, poor electrical conductivity, short cycle life, and the material crystal water is not easy to remove, the compaction density is not high, and industrialization is difficult.
The advantages of polyanionic compounds are that most of them have open three-dimensional skeletons, stable material structure, good rate performance, good cycle performance, and long cycle life, and the disadvantages are higher cost, poor conductivity and energy density.
In summary, among the three technical routes, the layered transition metal oxide sodium-ion battery has the best electrochemical performance, the theoretical specific capacity can reach about 240mAh/g, which is about 1.4 times that of lithium iron phosphate batteries, and the raw materials are rich, the synthesis is simple, and the industrial path is smooth, which is the key technical route of many sodium power companies such as Zhongke Hai Na and Sodium Innovation Energy.
In terms of the industrialization of sodium-ion batteries, with the commissioning of Zhongke Hai Na Fuyang production line, the layered transition metal oxide technology route is half a position ahead and begins to widen the gap with the other two technical routes.
